Aspects of the Yoga tradition date back thousands of years. While the focus of Yoga as practiced in Western cultures tends toward physical improvement and achievement, Yoga at its foundation is a philosophy, an ethical way of life, and it emphasizes meditation as a means to greater awareness and self-actualization.
The use of asana (postures) provides the practitioner with his or her own living, breathing laboratory in which to observe not only how the body reacts to movement and stillness, but also how the mind reacts to the body, its surroundings, and conditions throughout the practice. Over time, tendencies to judge our own perceived limitations as 'good' or 'bad' can fade, and can be replaced with a greater sense of equanimity. When this equanimity flows over into all areas of life, Yoga practitioners can find the 'union' ~ the definition of Yoga ~ with all that surrounds them.
