Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art, founded by Morihei Ueshiba (known as O Sensei, "great teacher") in the early 20th century. The meaning of the word aikido is "the way of harmony", and the techniques of the art reflect that meaning. The aikidoka (practitioner) seeks to deflect his or her opponents' attacks by using wrist locks, throws, and other methods, throwing the opponent off balance and resolving the conflict.
Through regular practice, the student can acquire not only a means of self-defense, but awareness of one's surroundings, agility, strength, and balance -- as well as comradery with fellow students.
